1. Who we are
GCSE Maths AI is made by Neuro-Symbolic Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16780511) with its registered office at 3rd Floor, 86-90 Paul Street, London EC2A 4NE. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), registration number 234252305. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy.
You can contact us about anything in this policy at hello@neuro-symbolic.co.uk.
2. What this policy covers
This policy applies to the GCSE Maths AI app for iPhone and iPad and to this website. It explains what information we collect, why, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have.
3. Children and young people
GCSE Maths AI is designed for pupils studying for GCSE Mathematics, most of whom are aged 14 to 16. We take the protection of children's information seriously and design the app in line with the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code. In particular:
- An account for a pupil under 18 should be set up and managed by a parent or guardian, who accepts our terms of use on the pupil's behalf.
- We do not show advertising in the app, and we do not use pupils' information for marketing or profiling.
- We do not sell personal information, and we never will.
- We collect only what we need to teach and to keep a record of progress.
4. What we collect
Account information
The email address used to create and manage the account, the pupil's first name or a nickname, and the pupil's school year or target exam date so that lessons can be planned.
Learning information
The answers and working a pupil enters, the hints and guidance they receive, assessment results, and the record of topics secured and progress made. This is the information the app uses to find gaps, choose the next lesson and show progress to the pupil, parents and, where a school account is used, teachers.
Technical information
Device type, operating system version, app version, crash reports and the IP address from which the app connects. We use this to keep the service secure and working properly.
Purchase information
Subscriptions are bought through Apple. Apple tells us whether a subscription is active so that we can provide the service. We do not receive or store payment card details.
Correspondence
If you email us, we keep the email and our reply so that we can deal with your request and refer back to it.
5. How we use it, and why we are allowed to
- To provide the service you have asked for (contract): creating the account, assessing the pupil, generating lessons, hints and feedback, and keeping the progress record.
- To keep the service secure and improve it (legitimate interests): detecting faults and misuse, fixing bugs, and understanding in aggregate which lessons work well. Where we analyse learning information to improve the app, we use it in a form that does not identify individual pupils wherever possible.
- To answer your questions and meet our legal obligations (legitimate interests and legal obligation).
- To send you news about the app (consent), only if you have asked for it. You can withdraw consent at any time.
6. Where the processing happens
The app sends a pupil's working to our servers, which generate the hints, guidance and feedback. Our servers are hosted in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area. Where we use third-party providers to help with this, including providers of AI models, they act on our instructions under a written contract and may not use the information for their own purposes. If any provider processes information outside the UK, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place as required by UK data protection law.
7. Who we share it with
- Apple, for subscriptions and app distribution, under Apple's own privacy policy.
- Service providers who host our servers, send our emails or help us run the service, acting only on our instructions.
- Schools, where the account was created through a school, so that teachers can see progress.
- Authorities, where the law requires it.
We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone.
8. How long we keep it
We keep account and learning information for as long as the account is active, so that progress is not lost between school years. When an account is deleted we remove the personal information within 30 days, except where we must keep a record for legal or accounting reasons. Support correspondence is kept for two years. Crash and connection logs are kept for no more than 90 days.
9. Security
Information is encrypted in transit and at rest, access within Neuro-Symbolic Ltd is restricted to people who need it to run the service, and we review our security practices regularly. No system is perfectly secure, but we take all reasonable steps to protect your information and will tell you and the ICO if a breach affecting you ever occurs.
10. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you or your child, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, to ask for it in a portable form, and to withdraw any consent you have given. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@neuro-symbolic.co.uk. We will respond within one month.
If you are not happy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, though we would welcome the chance to put things right first.
11. This website
This website does not set tracking cookies and does not carry advertising. To see how many people visit and which pages they read, we use GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly service that counts page views without cookies and without identifying individual visitors. It records the page visited, the referring site, browser type, screen size and country, but not your IP address or name. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which may record the IP address of the device requesting them. If you email us from the site, see section 4 above.
12. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when the service changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised, and we will tell account holders about any significant change before it takes effect.
